  1. The news regarding linking the bank account and other services with Aadhaar is trending across the nation. It is mandatory to all the citizens of the country to enrol for the aadhaar card and link their bank account and other services with it. But not everyone is aware of the policy and exemption for the NRIs and PIOs. If you are an NRI, then I recommend you to read this news carefully and make sure that you do not miss anything related to the policy announced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for the NRIs regarding linking bank a/c, PAN with Aadhaar.

A few days back the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that the NRIs and PIOs are not required to link bank accounts and other services with Aadhaar. The instruction has been given to various implementation agencies to work out a process to verify the status of such individuals. According to the Prevention of Money laundering Rules 2017 and the Income Tax Act, the linking of bank accounts and PAN respectively, “is only for those individuals who are eligible to enrol for Aadhaar.” UIDAI added.

They also mentioned that it is very important for the implementing agencies to keep this thing in mind that Aadhaar as an identity document can be requested only from those who come under Aadhaar Act, and that most NRIs/PIOs/ OCIs may not be eligible for its enrolment.

Non-Residentident Indians (NRIs), Person of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) were facing problems when Aadhaar was being demanded with regard to various services and benefits, despite the fact that they were not entitled to the 12-digit biometric identifier.

Therefore, the UIDAI has clarified to central ministries and states in a note dated 15 November, where it is clearly stated that as per the Aadhaar Act 2016, the laws regarding submitting/linking of Aadhaar for availing the services/benefits apply to the residents only and most of the NRIs/PIOs/OCIs may not be eligible for Aadhaar enrolment as per Aadhaar Act.
