Elephanta Caves, Maharashtra

The caves are made on the Island of Gharapuri or the Elephanta Island. These caves provide a statuesque view of 7 meters high Shiva statue having three facets. The three facets represent Lord Shiva as the preserver, the creator and the destroyer. The crafts stones and carving done on the walls have much to explain. Archeological department of India is responsible for the maintenance of these caves.
