UT Administration to introduce 1000 more E-Rickshaws in Chandigarh

With the aim of reducing air pollution and promoting eco-friendly modes of transport, Chandigarh administration has come up with e-rikshaw policy. The city will soon get to see 1000 more e-rikshaws running on the roads of Chandigarh. The UT administration has initially decided to issue only 1000 licenses for these battery operated vehicles. The licensing work for these e-rikshaws will be taken over by State Transport Authority (STA).

It is a great move by the administration as the city is currently experiencing traffic jams at peak hours of the day. Also, the increasing number of vehicles in the city adds to the increasing pollution levels in the city. The step taken by the UT administration will not only reduce the air pollution levels of the city but will also result in less diesel and petrol consumption.

At present, a total of 300 e-rikshaws are running on the roads of Punjab University, Rock Garden, and Sukhna Lake. Now, to avoid the traffic the administration is planning to allow the entry of e-rikshaws throughout the city restricting only a few spots.

 No E-Rikshaws on V-1, V-2 & V-7 roads

The battery operated vehicles which were earlier limited to operate only at Rock Garden, Punjab University and Sukhna Lake will now be plying on almost all the roads of Chandigarh. The e-rikshaws will not be permitted to operate on  V-1, V-2, and V-7 roads.

V-1 roads are the stretches from Zirakpur to Tribune Chowk, Transport Chowk in Sector 26 to Sector 47 and Transport Chowk to Manimajra,  National Highways like Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg comprise V-2 roads and V-7 roads include Pedestrian paths and cycle tracks.

Rules to be followed

  • The vehicle must be equipped with first aid box and fire extinguisher.
  • A grey Uniform has been made compulsory for all the e-rikshaw drivers.
  • The helpline number 1073 of traffic police should be displayed on the vehicle.
  • The vehicle should bear the name, address and telephone number of the permit holder.
  • The owners of the vehicles will be required to dispose of the used batteries only through an authorized e-waste disposal agency.
  • For any traffic offenses, the battery operated vehicles will be liable for penalty under Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 and Chandigarh Motor Vehicle Rules, 1990.

E-Rickshaws – Friends with your Pocket

E-Rickshaws are proving to be a good-good in every sense. Along with, being eco-friendly these vehicles will fit perfectly in your pockets. The fare for the E-rickshaws is yet to be decided but it will cost you way lesser than that is being charged by auto-rickshaws.

These vehicles are exempted from value-added tax (VAT) and road tax for registration by the UT administration. The vehicles should have a type-approval certificate from the designated testing agencies as prescribed by the Union ministry of road transport and highways.

In order to keep the availability of the rickshaws up to demand the STA would closely watch and regulate the number of vehicles to be registered.

GMCH becomes the first government hospital to get its Navigation App

To aid the patients and visitors Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32 has come up with the concept of getting a real-time navigation system under an e-health project. This system will prove to be of great help to guide patients to the right door in its multi-floor, multi-block maze. The navigation system will work just like google maps.

Students of the Panjab University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) have been working on this Android-based application, while the hospital is working out its cost. Recently, The student developers from the UIET gave a presentation about the system to the concerned UT Officials. The mapping work for the system has been completed and soon the navigation system will come into operation. GMCH is the first government hospital to get this smart facility.

The hospital has around 4000 average daily visitors. It becomes difficult for the patients to read department signs as many of them are less literate. This great initiative by the hospital will help the patients to get hassle-free treatment.

Previous Initiatives by GMCH,32

  • GMCH earlier started with the online registrations and appointment. The patients can now register themselves online and avoid those long queues.Going a step further from the PGI, GMCH has divided the OPD hours into time slots and patients can choose a suitable time slot for their appointment.
  • Last year, the hospital also took an initiative to get a few GPS-enabled wheelchairs for patients to access the hospital but sadly it ended at trial.

Future Projects

As of now, all the navigation systems of the hospital are offline and this would be the first online navigation system. The hospital officials are planning to bring many upgradations in their working process to ease the patients with their visits and treatment. GMCH is currently planning to make MRI, X-ray, and other laboratory test reports available online to build a patient history for better analysis.

PGI is also planning to adopt this navigation system if everything works as per the expectations of the officials. Hope this real-time navigation system brings a little relief to the patients.

Now Travel from New Delhi to Chandigarh in less that 2 hours| All thanks to Semi-high speed Trains

Gone are the days of long tiresome travels, here comes a good news for all the city beautiful folks! Indian Railways have set up a project for new semi-high speed trains that would soon be running between Delhi and Chandigarh. The task of submitting the execution strategy and implementation model involving up-gradation of the Delhi-Chandigarh route has been assigned to SNCF, the French Railways.

Semi-high Trains – Reducing the Tavel time

These semi-high speed trains are likely to cut the travel time to two hours with just one stop at Ambala. That’s a significant reduction in travel time given the distance of 245 km’s being currently covered in three hours thirty minutes by Shatabdi Express and up to seven and a half hours if you opt for the cheapest route to Chandigarh. At present, there are 13 direct trains running from New Delhi to Chandigarh, including the Kalka Shatabdi, the Uhl Janshatabdi, and the Himalayan Queen.

The Delhi-Chandigarh corridor is one of the busiest in the country and is spread over 245 km long route. With around ten major curves in 32 km on the current rail route, this isn’t really the ideal route for fast trains. Despite all the curves on the proposed semi-high speed route, The Indian Railways is going full steam to achieve the target to run trains at speed of up to 200 Km/hr.

Earlier, the plan was to straighten up these curves to facilitate uninterrupted speed but now the public transporter will not go for straightening up the curves and instead opt for slowing down while negotiating the track, according to the railways.

Project Cost

The cost for this semi-high speed train project could hover at around Rs 10,000 crore, with Rs. 46 crore per km to run the train at 200 Km/Hr. The cost will include upgrading the Delhi-Chandigarh corridor and rolling stock. If completed successfully, it will make the journey from New Delhi to Chandigarh a lot easier.

Other Priority Routes

Indian Railways have identified nine priority routes for modernization and introduction of semi-high speed trains. The Delhi-Chandigarh route is one of those nine proposed routes. Other routes include Delhi-Kanpur, Delhi-Agra, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Goa, Nagpur-Bilaspur, Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysore, Chennai-Hyderabad and Secunderabad-Nagpur. The total track distance to be upgraded is 6,400 Kilometers.
