Before the Storm Hits

You must be fully prepared to fight the storm even before it strikes. Here are a few tips that you must follow before the storm actually strikes:

GET YOUR EMERGENCY-KIT READY

You should have enough non-perishable food and water storage on hand for at least 3 days. Also, make sure to have necessary items like flashlight, batteries, hand warmers, can openers, cell phone chargers and a first aid kit available at your home.

PREP YOUR HOME

The freezing temperatures outside may often lead to frozen water pipes. This may also cause your pipes to burst. So, one must learn to turn off the water valves of one’s home if the situation arises.

GAS UP YOUR CAR

If you are on the road while the storm hits, make sure that you have enough gas to return home. In case you are stuck in the storm, you should have enough gas in your car to keep the heat on to save you from the chilling cold.

DURING THE STORM:

One must stay inside the home once the storm starts and avoid going out unless it is too necessary. In case, you cannot avoid going out in the storm than follow these tips to stay safe:

WEAR LAYERS

If there isn’t any way to avoid stepping out into the storm, make sure you get dressed in enough warm layers of clothing to save you from cold. Do not forget to wear a tightly fitted and water repellent coat. Do carry your gloves, hat and ccarf to prevent the loss of body heat. You should also wear layered clothes when you are inside if there is a power cut.

WALK ON ICE – SAFELY

Be a Penguin. No, seriously, the trick to walk on the ice is to walk like a penguin. Keep your torso straight, both the hands on your sides and avoid kicking your legs back.

FALL ON ICE – THE RIGHT WAY

Hahaa… Well, yes! There is a correct way to fall. To fall properly bend on your knees while keeping your arms away. Now fall on your side and tuck your head.

SHOVEL SMART

You must follow a safe way to shovel the snow. Before you begin to shovel, make sure to stretch up your body. Maintain a proper posture and try to push the snow, instead of lifting it. One should not shovel the snow for more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

Stay safe!!
